Info & Lore > Deities

Across all of Toril, people respect and fear the divine powers. The deities of Faerun promote the causes they favour, watch over the domains for which they are responsible and constantly seek to increase, or at least defend, their temporal power by protecting their worshippers and encouraging the active expansion of their faiths.

Mortals who deny the deities who made the world and govern its basic forces are rare indeed, although a few powerful beings acknowledge no entity as their superior.

Some Faerunians zealously follow one deity. Others make sacrifices to many deities, while upholding one as their personal patron. Still others sacrifice to as many deities as possible, shifting allegiances as their circumstances and needs warrant. It's a rare Faerunian who hasn't occasionally hoped to avert the baleful influence of an evil deity with a propitious gift, or thanked a good power for an unexpected blessing.

Players may choose to select a deity for their character for roleplaying reasons. Choice of deity will not effect gameplay except possibly in the most minor way. A character does not need to have the same alignment as their deity, but the alignment should be similar. Eg, a neutral good character may have a chaotic good deity, but not chaotic evil. A lawful neutral character may have a lawful evil deity, but not chaotic good.

Do not take a race-specific deity unless the character belongs to that race. However if they do belong to a non-human race, they can take their racial deity whatever their alignment.

Far more deities exist than are listed here. Some towns or villages may worship a deity nobody in other regions has ever heard of. Feel free to invent your own deity. Also, some deities have more than one "aspect" - ie, they may be worshipped under a different name in some places. You could take a deity from here, and decide that in your character's home town they are seen slightly differently.

Note however that the deities listed here are the major deities of Faerun, and most people do worship one or more of these.
